Read Tracker

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Read Tracker works on your device: an Android phone, an iPhone, an iPad, a Mac or a Windows computer. There is no account, no advertising and no tracking, and nothing you read, say or scan is sent to us. We never see your documents, your voice, your photos or your reading reports. A few things are done by your device's own services and, on Android, by Google's on-device libraries; this page says exactly which, and what they send.

The sections below describe the Android app. On an iPhone, iPad or Mac the app uses Apple's services instead of Google's: see On iPhone, iPad and Mac. For Windows, see On Windows.

What stays on your phone

Everything Read Tracker saves is kept in the app's own private storage on your phone:

We never receive any of these. If your phone's own Google backup is turned on, Android may include the app's settings and saved text in that backup, which is stored in your own Google account under Google's terms. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android's settings, deletes all of it.

Your voice

The microphone is used only while the microphone button is on (it turns red), to follow your reading. The app never records your voice to a file and never stores or sends audio itself.

Reading aloud to you

"Read it to me", "Read and repeat" and tapping a word to hear it use your phone's text-to-speech service, which receives the words to be spoken. On most phones this runs on the device.

Translation

Translating a word or sentence uses Google's ML Kit translation, which runs on the phone. The first time you translate between two languages, the app downloads that language's dictionary from Google (about 30 MB, after you agree). After that, the words you translate are translated on the phone and are not sent anywhere.

Scanning pages

"Scan pages" opens Google's document scanner, which is part of Google Play services and runs on the phone; the app itself has no camera permission. The text on the pages is then read on the phone by Google's ML Kit text recognition. The photos are deleted as soon as their text has been read, and only the text is kept, on the phone. Nothing is uploaded.

Downloads the app makes

The app connects to the internet only to download things you asked for:

As with any download, the server sees your device's internet address. Nothing about you, your documents or your reading is sent with these downloads.

Diagnostics sent by Google's ML Kit

The translation and text recognition features come from Google's ML Kit libraries. Like all ML Kit libraries, they send Google limited diagnostic information so Google can maintain them: the device model and Android version, the app's name and version, a per-installation identifier that is not meant to identify you, performance figures and error codes, and, for translation, which two languages were used. They do not send the text you translate, your voice or your photos. The data is encrypted in transit and Google states that it is not passed to third parties. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure.

Documents you open

When you open a file, the app reads only the file you picked (or the one you shared to it from another app). It does not browse your storage and has no permission to.

Permissions, and why each one exists

The app requests no camera, contacts, location, storage or phone identity permission.

On iPhone, iPad and Mac

The app works the same way on Apple devices, with Apple's services in place of Google's. No Google service or library is part of it there, so nothing in the ML Kit section above applies.

On Windows

On a Windows computer the app comes from the Microsoft Store. No Google or Apple service is part of it there, so the ML Kit section above does not apply.

Purchases

Read Tracker is bought once, through Google Play, the App Store or the Microsoft Store. The purchase is handled entirely by Google, Apple or Microsoft, under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not receive your payment details. The stores report ordinary order information to developers (such as the price and the country), which we use only for accounting and refunds.

Get Read Tracker only from Google Play, the App Store or the Microsoft Store

Install it only from Google Play, Apple's App Store or the Microsoft Store. A copy from anywhere else could have been modified, is not covered by this policy, and is not something we can vouch for.

If you contact us

If you choose to email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use them only to answer you and fix the problem, we do not add you to any mailing list, and we do not share them. You may ask us to delete the correspondence at any time.

Europe (GDPR, UK GDPR)

The app is designed for data minimization: your documents, voice, scans and reports are processed on your phone, under your control, and no personal data reaches us from the app. There is therefore nothing for us to access, correct, export or erase. The device services and libraries described above are provided by Google (on Android), by Apple (on iPhone, iPad and Mac) and by Microsoft (on Windows) under their own privacy policies.

California (CCPA/CPRA)

We do not collect, sell or share personal information, and we do not process it for targeted advertising. "Sell" and "share" are used here as defined by California law.

Children's privacy

Read Tracker is meant for users aged 13 and over; parents and teachers may use it together with younger children. The app collects no personal information from anyone, of any age. If a younger child uses it, a parent should choose a built-in speech engine on Android, or on Apple devices a language that is recognized on the device, so that speech stays on the device. On Windows, speech always stays on the computer.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new "Last updated" date.
